Effects of Family Communication Change on an Adolescent Diagnosed with ADHD and Anxiety
Kim Hyung-Suk

Abstract
Objectives: This case study explored communication problems among, and therapeutic intervention with, a family of a 17-year-old boy diagnosed with ADHD and anxiety.

Methods: Data were collected from 19 sessions with the family and then analyzed using Miles and Huberman¡¯s network and matrix. Pre- and post-test measures were performed to examine the effect of therapeutic interventions on the client family¡¯s problem.

Results: The results of the study revealed that the factors causing conflict within the family were related to dysfunctional communication between the parents and ignorance about the symptoms of ADHD. The therapist¡¯s intervention techniques resulted in improved communication within the family as well as a significant decrease in problem behavior.

Conclusions: The therapeutic interventions used in the case, based on the Satir model, had positive effects on the teenager¡¯s emotional control, acting out, and anxiety.
